College Writing Suggestions

图片
What this handout is about This handout will help you figure out what your college instructors expect when they give you a writing assignment. It will tell you how and why to move beyond the five-paragraph themes you learned to write in high school and start writing essays that are more analytical and more flexible. What is a five-paragraph theme? North Carolina public school teachers sometimes give a writing assignment called a “five-paragraph theme”; in other places, this kind of assignment is called a “keyhole essay.” Either way, it’s hourglass-shaped: it begins with something general, narrows down in the middle to discuss specifics, and then branches out to more general comments at the end. In a classic five-paragraph theme, the first paragraph starts with a general statement and ends with a thesis statement containing three “points”; each body paragraph discusses one of those “points” in turn; and the final paragraph sums up what the student has written. Why do hi

10 topics to avoid in a college admission essay

图片
(MoneyWatch) For students who are applying for college, one of the scariest parts of the admission process is writing the dreaded essay. A common mistake that students make when tackling their college essays is to pick the wrong topics. It's a huge turn off, for instance, when applicants write about their sports exploits or their pets. I asked Janine Robinson, who is the creator of a wonderful website called  Essay Hell  and the author of an excellent ebook entitled " Escape Essay Hell ," to identify those essay topics that teenagers should absolutely avoid. 5 tips for writing a winning college essay 5 myths about getting in and paying for college 10 great opening lines from Stanford admission essays Here are Robinson's college essay no-no's: 1. Listing accomplishments.  You might be the most amazing person on the planet, but nobody wants a recitation of the wonderful things you've done, the people you've encountered and the places you've

Is it worth it to join honors societies in high school?

图片
Depends on what you look to achieve from it. I agree with Micheal that some groups or organizations can present opportunities that can be advantageous, however at this particular time in your life I think this is less likely. Agreeing with Matthew, my feeling is that in high school almost any type of group is there to serve one of two functions: to bring together like minded individuals, or to solicit money from you in some manner. Most of these “honor” type societies don’t really do much of anything for you except put your name on a list, and for which they ask for anything from $20 to hundreds of dollars. Its a scam. If you are taking AP courses and keeping a good GPA, you will automatically be added to the school’s honors which mean much more than some bullshit elitist list generated by who knows who from who knows where.

Articles-A Complete Grammar Guide

图片
What Are Articles? Articles are words that define a noun as specific or unspecific. Consider the following examples: After  the  long day,  the  cup of tea tasted particularly good. By using the article  the , we’ve shown that it was one specific day that was long and one specific cup of tea that tasted good. After  a  long day,  a  cup of tea tastes particularly good. By using the article  a , we’ve created a general statement, implying that any cup of tea would taste good after any long day. English has two types of articles: definite and indefinite. Let’s discuss them now in more detail. The Definite Article The definite article is the word  the . It limits the meaning of a noun to one particular thing. For example, your friend might ask, “Are you going to  the  party this weekend?” The definite article tells you that your friend is referring to a specific party that both of you know about. The definite article can be used with singular,  plural , or uncount

HOW PLASTICS ARE MADE

图片
Plastics are derived from natural, organic materials such as cellulose, coal, natural gas, salt and, of course, crude oil. Crude oil is a complex mixture of thousands of compounds and needs to be processed before it can be used. The production of plastics begins with the distillation of crude oil in an oil refinery. This separates the heavy crude oil into groups of lighter components, called fractions. Each fraction is a mixture of hydrocarbon chains (chemical compounds made up of carbon and hydrogen), which differ in terms of the size and structure of their molecules. One of these fractions, naphtha, is the crucial compound for the production of plastics. Two main processes are used to produce plastics - polymerisation and polycondensation - and they both require specific catalysts. In a polymerisation reactor, monomers such as ethylene and propylene are linked together to form long polymer chains. Each polymer has its own properties, structure and size depending on the various typ

Difference Between Silicone Rubber and EPDM ?

What is the Difference Between Silicone Rubber and EPDM? Posted by Sally Yu  on May 21, 2018 When selecting a rubber for use, many Engineers end up needing to make a choice between selecting silicone or EPDM. We obviously have a preference for silicone(!) but how do the two match up against each other? What is EPDM and if you find yourself needing to choose between the two, how do you decide? Here is our quick-fire guide to EPDM… What is EPDM? EPDM stands for Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomers and it’s a type of high density synthetic rubber. It’s not as heat resistant as silicone but is able to withstand high temperatures up to 130°C. Because of that it’s used as a component within a wide variety of industries including industrial, construction and automotive. In lower temperatures, EPDM will reach brittle point at -40°C. EPDM is also popular as an outdoor rubber as it’s resistant to weathering including acid and alkali resistance. As such, you’ll typically fi

Where Does Silicone Rubber Come From?

Where does silicone rubber come from? Find out with us today! Posted by Sally Yu  on May 21, 2018 To grasp the multitude of ways silicone rubber can be used, it is important to realise its origins. In this blog, we take a look at where silicone comes from to understand more about its characteristics. Silicone rubber formula thumbnail Understanding the different types of rubber To understand what silicone is you first need to know the different types of rubber available. In its purest form, natural rubber is more commonly recognised as latex and actually comes directly from a rubber tree. These trees were first discovered in South America and usage of the rubber from within them dates back to the Olmec culture  (Olmec literally means “Rubber People”!) . Anything which is not formed from this natural rubber is therefore man-made and is known as synthetic. A new substance made by mixing various materials together is called a synthetic polymer. If the polymer d

The Reason Why Use Silicone Rubber?

图片
WHY USE SILICONE RUBBER? Posted by Sally Yu  on May 21, 2018 Silicone rubbers are rubber compounds with both organic and inorganic properties, as well as highly pure fumed silica as two main components. They possess many characteristics which are not present in other organic rubbers and have important roles in numerous industries, such as electrical, electronics, automobiles, food, medical, household appliances and leisure products. Silicone rubber is uniquely different from conventional rubber in that the molecule structure of the polymer consists of long chains of alternating silicone and oxygen atoms. This polymer therefore has an organic and inorganic nature. The inorganic part makes the polymer very resistant to high temperature and gives good electrical insulating properties and chemical inertness, while the organic components make it extremely flexible. Characteristics Heat Resistance: Silicone rubbers are extremely heat resistant as compared to normal org
